Senior Advanced Manufacturing Engineer - Thin Films

Honeywell Aerospace•Minneapolis, MN
•$102,000 - $127,000

About The Position

The Thin Films Organization is seeking a Process Engineer with expertise in ion-beam deposition for optical films. The role focuses on developing, optimizing, and ensuring the manufacturability of thin-film deposition processes in high-volume production, along with developing and improving substrate-cleaning processes. The engineer will work with Design Engineering and Operations to implement processes and resolve manufacturing challenges, analyze in-process data to determine adjustments, and drive defect reduction, uniformity, yield, and process-capability improvements. The position also defines process-input requirements for new deposition equipment, including settings, maintenance, materials, operating conditions, and limits. Candidates must have an M.S. or Ph.D. in a specified engineering or STEM field, or the stated engineering experience qualification, and be able to work in a cleanroom. The role requires thin-film characterization experience and familiarity with statistical process control and design of experiments. The preferred profile includes knowledge of multilayer oxide films and surface chemistry in plasma environments, materials failure analysis, high-volume manufacturing, and the ability to collaborate across functions, communicate clearly, balance priorities, and take ownership. The annual base salary range is $102,000–$127,000. Candidates must meet the U.S. person requirement for compliance with export-control laws. The application period is estimated at 40 days from the posting date of 10/21/2026, subject to change based on business needs and candidate availability.

Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; Materials Science; or a STEM-related field, or 3+ years of experience or an advanced degree in an engineering discipline, as stated in the posting.
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in thin-film characterization.
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE).
  • Must be a U.S. person: a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamental knowledge of material properties and manufacturing methods of multilayered oxide films, ideally for use in optical components.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surface chemistry and interactions of substrates and dielectric thin films in relevant plasma environments.
  • Experience in failure analysis of materials.
  • Ability to balance priorities across daily tasks and strategic projects.
  • Hands-on work ethic.
  • Initiative and ownership of responsibilities and actions.
  • Ability to partner and collaborate with team members across functions.
  • Clear and direct communication that ensures messages are understood across diverse teams.
  • Root Cause Corrective Action, Lean, or Six Sigma experience.
  • Product or process engineering experience in high-volume manufacturing.
  • Expertise in ion-beam deposition for optical films.
