About The Position

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Advanced Battery Cell Engineering team at the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC) at our Global Tech Center in Warren, MI. The Advanced Cell Engineer will work with cutting-edge battery chemistries and cell formats, contribute to state-of-the-art cell and component design, and apply creative, strategic thinking to deliver impactful solutions that support GM’s electrification goals. We’re looking for a candidate who is passionate about advanced technologies in automotive battery cells and eager to continuously learn and grow. You will be responsible for leveraging your technical experience to complement a talented team of advanced cell build engineers, to develop and implement solutions for cell design, and builds that meet program timelines. The ideal candidate must be comfortable speaking and presenting to internal and external audiences, including suppliers and vendors from a variety of backgrounds, to support GM’s advanced battery cell milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related Science Degree
  • 5+ years of battery cell experience or similar relevant engineering experience
  • Strong analytical skills for data analysis, project management, and problem-solving
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environment
  • Persuasive communication and presentation skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree, PhD, or other advanced certifications
  • Prior technical knowledge of prismatic automotive battery cells
  • Experience with automotive manufacturing or battery cell manufacturing
  • Exposure to quality systems related to a manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

  • Lead advanced battery cell development projects focused on improving future-state process capability, electrochemical performance, safety, and technology readiness for new cell designs and bill of materials.
  • Partner with internal engineering teams to identify gaps in current capability and help define equipment concepts, fixtures, controls, and technology needs that could enable next-generation cell development.
  • Help establish development-phase requirements, engineering guidelines, and success criteria for new prismatic battery cells designs to support a smooth transfer of mature approaches into execution teams.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of strategies for new cell architectures, materials, and build concepts to improve design robustness and downstream manufacturability.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and external battery cell industry trends and bring forward relevant insights to help shape internal development goals.
  • Build strategic project plans that support advanced cell engineering objectives and the introduction of new build and formation approaches.
  • Lead targeted development studies to better understand the interaction between cell design, materials, and formation response, and translate findings into practical recommendations for future specifications and process direction.
  • Work cross-functionally with design, build, and process teams to evaluate design changes, development risks, and process tradeoffs in support of cell build planning and execution.
  • Communicate technical updates clearly to stakeholders, summarize key learnings, and raise critical risks, capability gaps, or integration issues that may affect timing or outcomes.
