About The Position

The Control Systems section within the Radar Analog and Power Department (RAP) has an exciting employment opportunity for a Senior Engineer with control system and power conversion experience. The ideal candidate possesses a combination of design, product and production support experience, electronics knowledge, and hands-on laboratory skills. The RAP department is responsible for design, product and production support engineering in the following areas: Control Systems – Servo Control Systems, Motor/Power/Process Control, Digital Feedback Systems, Command Generation, Inertial Stabilization, Navigation Algorithms Power System Design - Power System Noise, System Simulation and Modeling, Solid State Transmitters, Tube Transmitters, High Voltage Design, Power Sources, Generators Power Conversion - AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC, Linear and Switching Supplies, Power Factor Correction (PFC), Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS), Resonant Circuits, Synchronization, Noise Controls Power Distribution - Ground, Air, Shipboard, and Space, Power Generation, Line Voltage, High Current, Low Voltage, Micro-Power, DC, AC, Multi-Phase Power Control, Fault Reporting, Isolation, Protection Circuits, Redundant Systems Power Sub-System Design - Filters, Harmonic Control, EMI, Circuit Simulation, Magnetics, Protective Relay Systems, Short Circuit and Stress Analyses. This position is an onsite role. Regular travel to Tewksbury, MA; Marlborough, MA; Andover, MA; Woburn, MA; and/or Pelham, NH may be required depending on the assignment. Travel to supplier or customer sites may also be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years’ experience.
  • Experience with electromagnetic or electrohydraulic control actuation systems.
  • Requires a U.S. government issued security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years of experience with actuation systems or motion controls.
  • Experience developing technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems across multiple parts of the product lifecycle such as proposal, design, manufacture, integration and test.
  • Ability to estimate project / tasks level of effort and to deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower-level work packages and tasks.
  • Ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences.
  • Experience with feedback control systems, including control theory, system sizing, testing and integration, design to manufacturing, kinematic and simulation and analysis.
  • Experience developing system-based models using Matlab/Simulink.
  • Experience with Hardware-In-The-Loop development and tools such as dSpace.
  • Experience in design and development of test equipment for electromechanical systems that operate under high load and rate.
  • Experience with Failure Investigation Teams with FRACAS / FRB / RCCA.
  • Experience working with control actuation systems that employ permanent magnet brush and brushless DC motor technology and with different actuation drive systems including trapezoidal drive, sine drive and field-oriented control.
  • Experience with actuation communication busses; electromechanical actuators (using gears, ballscrews, leadscrews etc); position sensors; electronic controllers and power amplifiers.
  • Basic understanding of packaging electromechanical systems for management of grounding, shielding and electrical noise in compact designs.
  • Familiarity with command-line interfaces, Unix systems, networks, and software.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major.
  • Prior experience as engineering Team Lead (hardware, electrical or integration).
  • Existing US DoD security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Developing technical solutions for a wide range of high-performance actuation system and motion control challenges (array or launcher deployment, platform/enclosure stabilization, and azimuth rotation of array, platform/enclosures or launcher).
  • Working autonomously with limited oversight.
  • Managing small projects around assigned program work.
  • Providing guidance to other professionals.
  • Supporting detailed actuation system design, test design and execution, and support to systems or software engineering functions.
  • Covering a portion of the life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support.
  • Applying sound systems engineering principles to define and solve complex actuation system problems.
  • Influencing engineering teams to include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, software and firmware engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.
  • Supporting and driving the execution of product development projects.
  • Working with a Team/Technical Lead and under the guidance of an Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead.
  • Interacting with internal and external customers and leadership team members.
