About The Position

The Control Systems section within the Radar Analog and Power Department (RAP) has an exciting employment opportunity for an Actuation Systems Leader (P4 Electrical Engineer) with control system, power conversion, and leadership experience. The ideal candidate possesses a combination of project / team leadership, design, product and production support experience, electronics knowledge, and hands-on laboratory skills. The RAP department is responsible for design, product and production support engineering in the following areas: Power System Design - Power System Noise, System Simulation and Modeling, Solid State Transmitters, Tube Transmitters, High Voltage Design, Power Sources, Generators Power Conversion - AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC, Linear and Switching Supplies, Power Factor Correction (PFC), Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS), Resonant Circuits, Synchronization, Noise Controls Power Distribution - Ground, Air, Shipboard, and Space, Power Generation, Line Voltage, High Current, Low Voltage, Micro-Power, DC, AC, Multi-Phase Power Control, Fault Reporting, Isolation, Protection Circuits, Redundant Systems Power Sub-System Design - Filters, Harmonic Control, EMI, Circuit Simulation, Magnetics, Protective Relay Systems, Short Circuit and Stress Analyses Control Systems – Servo Control Systems, Motor/Power/Process Control, Digital Feedback Systems, Command Generation, Inertial Stabilization, Navigation Algorithms This position is an onsite role. Regular travel to Tewksbury, MA; Marlborough, MA; Andover, MA; Woburn, MA; and/or Pelham, NH may be required depending on the assignment. Travel to supplier or customer sites may also be required (up to 10%).

Requirements

  • Requires a bachelors degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience; or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • Experience with electromagnetic or electrohydraulic control actuation systems
  • Existing US DoD security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Eight (8) years of experience with actuation systems or motion controls
  • Experience developing technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems across multiple parts of the product lifecycle such as proposal, design, manufacture, integration and test
  • Ability to estimate project / tasks level of effort and to deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower-level work packages and tasks
  • Ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences
  • Experience with feedback control systems, including control theory, system sizing, testing and integration, design to manufacturing, kinematic and dynamic simulation and analysis
  • Experience developing system-based models using Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience with Hardware-In-The-Loop development and tools such as dSpace
  • Experience in design and development of test equipment for electromechanical systems that operate under high load and rate
  • Experience in Failure Investigation Teams with FRACAS / FRB / RCCA
  • Experience in working with control actuation systems that employ permanent magnet brush and brushless DC motor technology and with different actuation drive systems including trapezoidal drive, sine drive and field-oriented control
  • Experience with actuation communication busses; electromechanical actuators (using gears, ballscrews, leadscrews etc); position sensors; electronic controllers and power amplifiers
  • Basic understanding of packaging electromechanical systems for management of grounding, shielding and electrical noise in compact designs
  • Familiarity with command-line interfaces, Unix systems, networks, and software
  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major.
  • Prior experience as engineering Project or Team Lead (hardware, electrical or integration)

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex tasks, work autonomously with limited oversight, have expert-level knowledge of the Controls Engineering domain, manage medium-sized or multiple smaller projects around assigned program work, mentor other professionals, and provide input to the development of strategic vision for functional and organizational priorities of the Radar Power and Digital organization.
  • Support may include but is not limited to detailed actuation system design, test design and execution, and support to systems or software engineering functions.
  • Develop technical solutions for a wide range of high-performance actuation system and motion control challenges (array or launcher deployment, platform/enclosure stabilization, and azimuth rotation of array, platform/enclosures or launcher).
  • Responsibility will cover a portion of the life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support.
  • Apply sound systems engineering principles to define and solve sometimes complex actuation system problems while influencing engineering teams to include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, software and firmware engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.
  • Support and drive the execution of product development projects.
  • Work as a Team/Technical Lead and in collaboration with an Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on execution and engineering excellence, using established business, and engineering tools and processes.
  • Interact with internal and external customers and leadership team members.
