About The Position

The Senior Accountant role involves a variety of accounting tasks, including daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities. This position requires a strong understanding of accrual-based accounting, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to meet strict reporting deadlines. The Senior Accountant will report directly to the Director of Accounting and will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting for assigned associations. This role also includes involvement in budget preparation, financial audits, and tax return processes.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of work experience in a related field.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting.
  • Knowledge of accrual-based accounting.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to meeting reporting deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).

Responsibilities

  • Respond to requests from field staff and/or Board Members within 24 hours, providing professional responses or informing requesters of delays.
  • Respond to requests from corporate staff in a timely manner.
  • Stay informed about material transactions affecting cash availability.
  • Assess and prioritize tasks to meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Review and resolve notes from prior accounting periods.
  • Perform administrative functions such as record keeping and filing.
  • Approve weekly payables for assigned associations with cash flow issues.
  • Prepare bank transfers for reserve funding, special assessments, etc.
  • Reconcile bank accounts for assigned associations monthly.
  • Complete tasks on the Monthly Checklist for Financial Statement Preparation.
  • Prepare monthly Financial Packages (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Bank Reconciliations, Delinquency/Prepaid Reports, Accounts Payable Detail, Check Register) by contractual deadlines.
  • Reconcile each line item on the Balance Sheet and maintain Supporting Schedules.
  • Reconcile reserve fund balances to restricted, reserve cash balances if applicable.
  • Reconcile special assessment fund balances to restricted, special assessment cash balances if applicable.
  • Prepare a supporting schedule detailing funded reserve line items if "pooled reserves" were approved.
  • Analyze financial statements for accrual basis presentation and accuracy, using month-by-month reports to assess trends.
  • For developer-controlled associations: track important dates, invoice developer for monthly deficits during the Guarantee Period, coordinate with AR Supervisor to move in developer into unsold units after Guarantee Period, and invoice developer for assessments due on their units after Guarantee Period.
  • For annual Budget Preparation: fill in Budget Worksheet with month-to-month actual balances and fill in the Budget reserve schedule.
  • For Financial Audits: request required information from auditors, follow up to ensure timely progress, review audit report drafts (ensuring financial statements add correctly, tying notes to statements, reviewing proposed audit journal entries for accuracy), communicate material post-year-end events to the association, and follow up to ensure timely issuance of the final audit report.
  • Book audit entries affecting the fund balance upon receiving the final audit report.
  • Ensure tax return extensions are filed if the audit report is not final by March 15th, provide necessary financial information to the tax accountant, and ensure the tax return is filed by the due date (September 15th) if an extension is filed.
