About The Position

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for overseeing revenue recognition, financial analysis, reconciliations, and regulatory reporting functions to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable federal and state requirements. This position will play a key role in supporting month-end close, maintaining integrity of financial data, analyzing revenue trends, and ensuring timely submission of reports to funders, grant agencies, Medicaid, Medicare, and other regulatory bodies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit healthcare, behavioral health, or human services.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, and revenue recognition standards.
  • Experience with Medicaid, Medicare, grants, and third-party reimbursement preferred.
  • Experience preparing regulatory and funder reporting.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Experience in behavioral health, mental health, substance use treatment, or nonprofit healthcare organizations.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) and billing systems.
  • Experience supporting audits and compliance reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain monthly revenue recognition schedules in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Analyze revenue activity from Medicaid, Medicare, commercial insurance, grants, contracts, and other funding sources.
  • Reconcile billing system activity to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules related to revenue and accounts receivable.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Monitor deferred revenue, accrued revenue, contractual adjustments, and allowance methodologies.
  • Support preparation of monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Perform detailed analysis of accounts receivable, cash collections, denials, adjustments, and aging trends.
  • Reconcile revenue, receivable, and cash balances between billing systems and accounting records.
  • Identify variances, trends, and operational issues impacting reimbursement and financial performance.
  • Collaborate with revenue cycle and operational departments to resolve reconciliation and reporting issues.
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation for audits and compliance reviews.
  • Prepare and coordinate timely submission of regulatory, grant, and funder reports, including state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Assist with preparation of Medicaid, Medicare, and other reimbursement-related reports and surveys.
  • Maintain reporting calendars to ensure compliance with all filing deadlines.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial information submitted to funders and regulatory agencies.
  • Support annual audits, single audits, cost reports, and financial reviews by external auditors and agencies.
  • Maintain strong internal controls over revenue recognition and reporting processes.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Assist in development and documentation of accounting procedures and workflows.
  • Support implementation and optimization of financial and billing systems.
  • Assist with preparation of Board and Finance Committee reporting materials.
  • Provide support for budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.
  • Participate in special projects and organizational initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
