The Senior Accountant participates in the month-end closing process and assists in preparation of the internal, total-company financial statement package. This role monitors entries in the General Ledger to ensure appropriate allocation, determines if reclassifications are required, explains variances, and analyzes various accounts to avoid year-end audit exposure. The Senior Accountant develops and recommends new procedures, processes and policies for the accounting operations of assigned function, and serves as an accounting business partner to assigned function on highly complex issues. They provide input and may deliver training to personnel in various areas of accounting and finance, analyze, research and reconcile selected accounts and cost discrepancies, and effectively communicate with field associates, corporate support staff and management to ensure issues relating to accounting are brought to the appropriate individuals for action. This function performs both highly complex statistical and financial analysis and is required to think and act independently when judgment is required.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree in Accounting/Finance or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A solid understanding of accounting principles equivalent to a college level Intermediate Accounting course.
  • Possess a current CPA certification.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years accounting experience including progressively increasing areas of responsibility in 2 or more accounting functional areas.
  • Verbally communicate effectively and in writing with department associates, corporate support staff and senior management regarding accounting information.
  • Make recommendations on the most profitable and legally compliant approach to accounting issues.
  • A strong working knowledge of accounting operations related to a specific or multiple functional areas of accounting.
  • Act as an accounting liaison / business partner to a non-accounting business group.
  • Performance of detailed analytics over both balance sheet and Profit & Loss statements at the account level detail.
  • Manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Coached or mentored junior accounting partners.
  • Advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office Suite applications (e.g. Excel, Word, and Access).
  • 10-key by touch.
  • Accurate, detail oriented, proficient with personal computer based programs, and trainable on company specific systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous working experience with PeopleSoft financial software.
  • Retail experience is strongly preferred.
  • Previous employment for or work with a Big 4 company.

  • Efficiently create complex documents and/or reports using spreadsheet, database, and accounting software in a timely fashion.
  • Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes.
  • Analyze moderately to highly complex data to determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Perform accounting duties and control activities to ensure financial results are reported without error.
  • Research and analyze selective data sets and/or accounts pertaining to the duties of the specific functional area of accounting being performed.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, reconciliations, budgets, forms, reports, and schedules relating to the accounts in the specific area of focus.
  • Effectively communicate with field partners, corporate support staff, and senior management, ensuring issues related to accounting are communicated to the appropriate impacted partners for action.
  • Perform business process improvement including root cause analysis, recommendation development, and able to overcome roadblocks to functional success.
  • Indirect supervision of between 0 - 6 regular and/or temporary employees, including participation in interviewing, training, assignment delegation and review.
  • May indirectly manage/lead cross-functional work groups.
