THE OPPORTUNITY Vir Biotechnology is looking for a Senior Accountant to play a critical role in our monthly and quarterly close processes. You will own complex accruals and balance sheet areas, partner cross‑functionally to resolve issues, and help ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial reporting in a SOX‑compliant environment. This is a hands‑on role with meaningful ownership, ideal for someone who enjoys digging into the details while continuously improving close processes. This role reports to the Sr. Director, Accounting Operations and is located in our San Francisco headquarters with an expectation of 3 days per week in office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA a plus)
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including month‑end and quarter‑end close in a SOX environment
  • Strong knowledge of accrual accounting, prepaids, fixed assets, and P&L analysis
  • Proven ability to independently own close areas, investigate discrepancies, and exercise sound judgment
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and structured schedules

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NetSuite, Coupa, and FloQast (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Own the preparation and review of monthly and quarterly journal entries, including G&A accruals (legal, professional services, facilities, software subscriptions), cash and investments, depreciation, amortization, and prepaid expense activity
  • Manage balance sheet reconciliations for assigned areas such as cash and investments, prepaids, fixed assets, and accrued G&A services, investigating variances and resolving issues
  • Maintain and review prepaid amortization schedules in FloQast, including short‑term and long‑term classifications and review for unpaid prepaid adjustments
  • Support PO‑based accruals across G&A, facilities, subscriptions, and PP&E categories, ensuring accurate period‑end cut‑off
  • Prepare fixed assets rollforward
  • Provide Accounts Payable coverage as needed, including invoice processing, Coupa review for accruals, and AP accrual support during close
  • Support SOX controls and audits by preparing documentation, tie‑outs, and responding to internal and external audit requests
  • Compile and review monthly headcount reporting and serve as a key point of contact for your assigned close areas
  • Identify opportunities to improve close efficiency, documentation, and processes
