About The Position

The Joint Special Operations University (JSOU) is seeking a Senior Academic Instructor to promote and conduct joint special operations research, analysis, and publication of scholarly articles at the operational and strategic levels. This role involves providing input for research projects, supporting a formalized research program, and conducting research and writing for publication in professional journals. The instructor will publish a significant research project or two smaller projects annually. Additionally, the position requires supporting courses with instruction (lectures, seminars, case studies) and SOF curriculum for senior professional military education institutions. Collaboration on education events and war games with faculty from other institutions is also a key responsibility. The role may focus on one of three areas: SOF Force Management, Leadership, or JSOF Campaigning & Warfighting.

Requirements

  • Must have an active Top Secret security clearance and current eligibility to gain access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
  • A terminal degree (PhD or EdD) OR an MA/MS degree with 15 years of SOF or related experience within the special operations community with service at the unified, sub-unified, or component command level or interagency role supporting the SOCOM enterprise.
  • Five years research and publications experience; Knowledge of industry standard publication and experience; published author in academic journal or book.
  • Five years operational experience within SOF, academic, or interagency community.
  • Five years expertise in national security affairs, or recognized academic experts on subjects of Ground, Sea, Land, Air/Space, or Interagency.
  • Three years post-secondary instructor experience or have graduated from a Faculty Development Course.

  • Staff leadership expertise at COCOM level (e.g. JDir leadership team, Division Leadership)
  • General understanding of the four DOD systems that drive SOF Total Force Management functions (1) Planning, Programing, Budgeting, & Execution (PPBE), (2) Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS), (3) Defense Acquisition System (DAS), (4) Global Force Management (GFM)
  • Detailed knowledge of SOF application of Global Force Management (1) SOF Strategy & Concept Development (2) SOF Design & Development process (3) Capability Development & Assessments (4) SOF Readiness Reporting (5) Campaign Plan for Global Special Operation (CP-CSO) (6) Global Special Operations Synchronization (GSOS)
  • Detailed knowledge of HQ USSOCOM Processes & Battle Rhythm
  • Leadership Team (Command/CSEL) at O-6 or above level experience
  • Staff experience at a geographic combatant command (GCC) J2/3/5/7 or position in direct support of GCC commander
  • Staff experience at a Service Headquarters or TSOC
  • Staff experience at a Service major command responsible for generating forces for combat missions
  • Staff experience that included interaction with HQ USSOCOM top leadership front offices
  • General Understanding of: (1) SOF Total Force Management functions (2) Interagency and coalition warfare concepts (3) Joint warfighting doctrine, including vertical and horizontal command relationships
  • Leadership (command or primary staff at COCOM, SOF Component, or Service staff)
  • Inter-agency experience- JIATF NCR or DoD Staff (e.g. ASD-SOLIC, DDSO, Joint Staff J3/J5)
  • General understanding of how to: (1) Synthesize policy and strategy and the relation to special operations in achieving sustainable strategic outcomes (2) Relate operational art to the concept of integrated campaigning (3) Design operational approaches that address problem sets and emerging challenges in a complex environment (4) Create campaign plans that integrate military operations, activities and resources and align non-military activities to achieve sustainable strategic outcomes
  • Detail knowledge of: (1) Joint Planning Process (2) Role of Warfighting Functions (3) Authorities & Permissions (4) Operational Art & Design (5) Center of Gravity Analysis (6) Risk Management.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and conduct joint special operations research, analysis, and publication of scholarly articles at the operational and strategic levels.
  • Provide input for research projects and support a formalized research program.
  • Conduct research and writing for publication in professional journals.
  • Publish a large research project or two smaller projects each year.
  • Support courses with instruction (Lecture, seminar, case study) and SOF curriculum senior professional military education institutions.
  • Collaborate on education events and war games with faculty at other institutions.
  • Develop and deliver instruction to O5/O6, GS14/15, E8/9 serving in leadership positions within the HQ USSOCOM staff, USSOCOM Components, or TSOC Staff and Deploying Joint Special Operations Headquarters (SOJTF & JSOTF) Staffs.
