About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Advising Office's mission is to teach, assist, and empower students to define, clarify and achieve academic and personal goals through professional, caring service. This position is responsible for providing counseling to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. This role typically provides supervision to lower level staff directly or on a project basis but may serve as an expert or point of escalation for more complex projects or issues. Counsels students on academic pursuits through the completion of degree program; connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development; researches and evaluates and delivers presentations on services provided. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Requirements

  • Master's degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality student service related to advising appointments and communication
  • Completion of advising-related paperwork and processes in timely and accurate manner. Ex: degree audits, graduation applications, etc.
  • Complete a minimum of two professional development trainings that are meaningful to the job/level.
  • Manages assigned leadership duties, providing clear and consistent communication as needed related to their specific individually assigned responsibility. Typically related to events, role, assignments, resources or specific student populations. Meets all established deadlines and completes work with a 90% accuracy rate, evaluation of leadership duties will occur on a quarterly basis.
  • Coach and support direct reports resulting in the attainment of all performance goals competencies, and values giving meaningful feedback and fair evaluations. Meet with staff on a regular (at least monthly) basis for individual employee coaching sessions and quarterly check-ins.
