About The Position

The College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Senior Academic Advisor to foster a work environment that enables all employees to contribute at the highest possible level. The Senior Academic Advisor will promote the growth of the Natural Sciences Advising Center and build connections with key stakeholders in CNS by understanding university policies, procedures, deadlines, and administrative needs. This is a leadership position within the CNS advising Center, working alongside Advising Coordinators to connect with faculty in CNS. The position requires eligibility to work in the US on a full-time basis without sponsorship. The purpose of this role is to provide academic advising for students in biosciences fields, serve as a liaison between CNS Undergraduate Education and CNS Biosciences Departments for faculty interactions, student logistics, and college-level needs. The advisor will also oversee projects between academic affairs staff at the departmental level and student affairs at the Dean’s Office level, ensuring collaboration across CNS units. The ultimate goal is to advance the core mission of fostering wellness, belonging, and success for all students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience working with college students in an academic counseling capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide academic and non-academic advising to students.
  • Ability to teach, present, and/or train student audiences.
  • Excellent verbal, written, digital and virtual communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Box and other relevant software.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to effectively and positively collaborate with others.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Must be student-centered and focused on student success.
  • Ability to anticipate next steps and initiate action without being asked.
  • Proven ability to act with discretion and hold necessary information confidential.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to work in-person on The University of Texas at Austin campus.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Advise students individually and in groups for a variety of majors and programs in CNS with an emphasis in one of the areas advised by Natural Sciences Advising.
  • Continuously communicate with students to provide accurate and important college- and university-wide information.
  • Work with students on class selection for upcoming semesters.
  • Create graduation plans.
  • Assist with pre-health and career path planning.
  • Process degree petitions.
  • Address the individual academic and non-academic needs of students.
  • Provide advising and assistance during Spring/Summer/Fall Orientation sessions.
  • Lead specific programs or processes for CNS Advising, with this portfolio focusing on Medical Laboratory Sciences advising services and faculty connections, as well as external partners.
  • Attend meetings, professional development opportunities, provide trainings, and serve on committees as assigned.
  • Support special projects and staff events within CNS.
