About The Position

Assist individuals with brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and other neurological disabilities in achieving a challenging, stimulating, dignified life by serving as an advocate and liaison for and on behalf of individuals’ rights and benefits. This role involves providing supervision, training, and assistance in accomplishing activities of daily living for a 33-year-old female with developmental delays and active monthly seizures. She is speech impaired but understands conversation, questions, and instructions. The position requires helping her reach simple goals and working on skills in the home and community, including arts and crafts, music, games, puzzles, cooking, assisting with equipment (walker, stander, bolster, wedge), and transporting her to community events in her wheelchair van with a power wheelchair. Assistance with personal hygiene is a requirement, with training provided by mom for all equipment. The individual supported also has three cats.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • One-year experience in the human service field preferred
  • Maintain a valid New York State driver’s license
  • A vehicle is required to perform the job
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be trained in all required trainings within 90 days of being hired and maintain current certifications with all required trainings
  • Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Applicants cannot have the same address as person supported
  • Must be able to talk, hear, stand for extended periods of time, walk, sit, twist, bend, use hand to finger, stretch with hands and arms
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to lift, transfer, and move at least 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Help the individual reach simple goals and work on skills in the home and community.
  • Engage in activities such as arts and crafts, music, games, puzzles, and cooking.
  • Assist with equipment such as a walker, stander, bolster, and wedge.
  • Transport the individual to community events in her wheelchair van with a power wheelchair.
  • Provide assistance with personal hygiene.
  • Maintain current certifications with all required trainings.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communications skills.
