About The Position

Performs general heavy and light cleaning and housekeeping services in University buildings, including residence halls, hospitals, and administration and academic buildings. The work includes operating cleaning and floor-maintenance equipment; cleaning and disinfecting rooms and surfaces; handling waste and trash; performing custodial tasks; and maintaining work areas and equipment. The role has no supervisory or direction responsibilities. The worker must be able to understand and carry out oral instructions and is continuously standing, walking, bending, and reaching. The work involves handling heavy and medium-weight materials, equipment, and supplies, and normally involves exposure to refuse, dirt, dust, detergents, body wastes, and odors indoors and outdoors, with occasional possible exposure to infection and infectious diseases.

Responsibilities

• Operate housekeeping and floor-maintenance equipment to strip, wax, and buff floors; wet- and dry-mop, sweep, and dust floors.
• Clean and disinfect rooms by fogging and washing floors, walls, furniture, and fixtures with germicidal detergents.
• Wash walls, ceilings, and stairs; clean overhead equipment such as vents and light fixtures; vacuum rugs, furniture, and draperies; clean, dust, and wax furniture; make empty beds; and distribute linen.
• Take down, wash, and rehang venetian blinds and screens; take down and rehang draperies and curtains; and wash windows inside and outside.
• Empty wastebaskets into pickup containers, pick up trash from designated areas, and load it into a large dump truck for transport to the compactor area.
• Wash trash cans and wastebaskets inside and outside, as well as blackboards, doors, and similar items; clean kitchens and dining areas.
• Perform custodial duties such as moving equipment and furniture up and down stairs, tightening doorknobs and latch plates, adjusting traverse rods and brackets, cleaning elevator door tracks, changing light bulbs, and shoveling snow.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the work storage closet and equipment, and perform other similar duties requiring comparable skill and responsibility as assigned.
