About The Position

Northbrook Public Library seeks a Security Supervisor for a full-time position (35 hours/week) with a varied schedule including 2 nights/week and 2 weekends/month. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. The Security Supervisor will oversee part-time Security Monitor staff, collaborate with library staff on emergencies and incidents, and support safety training activities. This position also involves utilizing security technology for system troubleshooting, data compilation, and report generation to aid administrative decisions. The ideal candidate will possess strong critical thinking, trauma-informed de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, and Mental Health First Aid skills. A commitment to customer service, library philosophy, intellectual freedom, the Library Bill of Rights, and patron confidentiality is essential. The role actively demonstrates the library's Service Standards and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) values.

Requirements

  • Prior supervisory experience to hire, train, schedule, evaluate, discipline, and coach part-time Security Monitor staff.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills with the ability to openly, clearly, and respectfully engage with a diverse public, patrons, and staff within a varied environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis management & de-escalation including trauma-informed de-escalation, conflict resolution, Mental Health First Aid, and mediation.
  • Ability to confidently coordinate emergency and incident response efforts, handle patron behavior issues, guide real-time crisis stabilization alongside the Person in Charge (PIC), and deliver thorough post-incident reports.
  • Full commitment to upholding library philosophy and ethics, including the Library Bill of Rights, protecting strict patron privacy/confidentiality, and supporting access to information for all community members.
  • Certified or able to become certified in CPR, AED, Mental Health First Aid, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of security technology, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and intrusion alerts, with the ability to use technology to assist in incident response, troubleshoot systems, and complete reports to inform data-driven decisions.
