About The Position

Northbrook Public Library seeks a dedicated, community-minded Security Supervisor to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. This role combines public service, daily operations support, supervising part-time Security-monitor staff, and collaborating with library staff to address emergencies and incidents. The Security Supervisor will also support training activities that ensure safety and security throughout the library and utilize security technology to troubleshoot systems, compile data, and create reports for administrative decisions. The ideal candidate possesses a cool head under pressure, utilizing critical thinking and trauma-informed de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, and Mental Health First Aid to resolve and prevent conflicts. Safety at the library is rooted in empathy, public service, and a deep alignment with core library tenets, including upholding intellectual freedom, the Library Bill of Rights, and strict patron confidentiality. This role champions customer service and actively demonstrates the library's Service Standards and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) values to successfully support and engage with our diverse community.

Requirements

  • Prior supervisory experience to hire, train, schedule, evaluate, discipline, and coach part-time Security Monitor staff.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills with the ability to openly, clearly, and respectfully engage with a diverse public, patrons, and staff within a varied environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis management & de-escalation including trauma-informed de-escalation, conflict resolution, Mental Health First Aid, and mediation.
  • Ability to confidently coordinate emergency and incident response efforts, handle patron behavior issues, guide real-time crisis stabilization alongside the Person in Charge (PIC), and deliver thorough post-incident reports.
  • Full commitment to upholding library philosophy and ethics, including the Library Bill of Rights, protecting strict patron privacy/confidentiality, and supporting access to information for all community members.
  • Certified or able to become certified in CPR, AED, Mental Health First Aid, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of security technology, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and intrusion alerts, with the ability to use technology to assist in incident response, troubleshoot systems, and complete reports to inform data-driven decisions.
