About The Position

Northbrook Public Library seeks a Security Supervisor to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. This full-time role (35 hours/week) involves public service, daily operations support, supervising part-time Security Monitor staff, and collaborating with library staff on emergencies, incidents, and safety training. The position also utilizes security technology for system troubleshooting, data compilation, and report generation to aid administrative decisions. The ideal candidate will possess strong critical thinking, trauma-informed de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, and Mental Health First Aid skills. Safety at the library is grounded in empathy, public service, and adherence to library tenets like intellectual freedom, the Library Bill of Rights, and patron confidentiality. This role champions customer service and demonstrates the library's Service Standards and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) values.

Requirements

  • Prior supervisory experience (hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, disciplining, coaching part-time staff).
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to openly, clearly, and respectfully engage with a diverse public, patrons, and staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis management & de-escalation (trauma-informed de-escalation, conflict resolution, Mental Health First Aid, mediation).
  • Ability to confidently coordinate emergency and incident response efforts.
  • Ability to handle patron behavior issues.
  • Ability to guide real-time crisis stabilization.
  • Ability to deliver thorough post-incident reports.
  • Full commitment to upholding library philosophy and ethics (Library Bill of Rights, patron privacy/confidentiality, access to information).
  • Certified or able to become certified in CPR, AED, Mental Health First Aid, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of security technology (surveillance cameras, access control systems, intrusion alerts).
  • Ability to use technology to assist in incident response, troubleshoot systems, and complete reports.
