About The Position

The Boston Athenæum seeks an experienced Security Officer to join its Security team. The Security Officer plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for members, patrons, staff, and visitors. This position focuses on protection of people and property while supporting the library’s mission as a public, inclusive, and educational space.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods while performing physical security and monitoring duties.
  • Strong observational skills with the ability to identify and respond appropriately to potential safety or security concerns.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflicts and resolve issues professionally and effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make timely decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and security-related technology.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in security, hospitality, customer service, law enforcement, military service, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor library premises to ensure safety and security of patrons, staff, and property
  • Conduct regular, highly visible patrols & tours throughout all interior zones (reading spaces & work spaces, restricted area, staff areas, and multi-level library stacks)
  • Enforce library policies, rules of conduct, and safety procedures in a professional and respectful manner
  • Remaining alert and observant to spot unusual behavior, safety hazards, or potential security breaches
  • Respond promptly to incidents, disturbances, medical situations, or emergencies
  • De-escalate conflicts and disruptive behavior using calm, non-confrontational techniques
  • Documenting shift logs, incident reports, building hazards (specific hazards—such as liquid spills, broken locks, blocked fire exits, or poor lighting—along with the precise location and the corrective action taken)
  • Assist patrons with safety-related concerns and provide general assistance when appropriate
  • Report any incidents, suspicious activities, and safety hazards
  • Coordinate with library staff, local law enforcement, and emergency services when necessary
  • Operating modern surveillance systems (CCTV), alarm panels, and access-control hardware
  • Interacting with visitors (i.e. answering basic questions, noting concerns, etc.)
  • Managing entryways, checking credentials, and maintaining order during large events
  • Executing evacuation plans, responding to fire alarms, and applying first aid or CPR
  • Making quick, sound decisions under pressure while following standard protocols
