About The Position

This is the supervisory level of security officer work, responsible for maintaining the safety and security of visitors, clients, residents, and facility staff by monitoring and protecting state property from trespass, fire, theft, and other hazards. In addition to work performed at the Security Officer level, employees perform and supervise security work, resolve escalated issues, and ensure the proper training and performance of security staff.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in security such as providing protective services to persons, facilities, or grounds from trespassing, theft, and other conditions.
  • One year of experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Six months’ experience in narrative report writing.
  • Coursework, training and/or work experience in staff supervision, which may include performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Responsibilities

  • Enforces safety, security, and orderliness in compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Makes regular rounds of buildings, units, and the perimeter to ensure that all is in order and that security devices on doors, windows, or gates are operable and secure.
  • Observes individuals for suspicious or threatening behavior and de-escalates potentially sensitive situations.
  • Anticipates the need for/requests higher level assistance.
  • Detects, reports on, and responds to trespass, fire, theft, unauthorized visitors, or other safety and security hazards and emergencies.
  • May locate and confiscate contraband and notify appropriate authorities.
  • Assists in detaining trespassers, violators, and potential escapees until proper authorities arrive, and may assist in searching for missing residents.
  • Uses security equipment and technology such as magnetometers, x-ray machines, remote access controls, and portable radios, and monitors and controls surveillance equipment such as cameras or alarm systems.
  • Reviews footage for violations, accidents, or other unusual situations.
  • Conducts routine drills such as fire or active shooter drills and inspects emergency equipment to ensure preparedness.
  • Provides general information and direction to employees, patrons, and visitors to state facilities.
  • Prepares logs and reports such as incident reports or shift activity logs.
  • Uses computer software and automated information systems to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report on data.
  • Completes patrol or other security duties by automobile or on foot; and may transport individuals within or outside of the assigned facilities and grounds.
  • May dispatch calls which includes receiving calls and obtaining and disseminating information internally or externally, as appropriate, based on the nature of the call.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Benefits

  • 5% shift differential pay for working four or more hours between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. the following day.
