Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word or similar software for report writing purposes required.
  • Four (4) years of progressive security, law enforcement, military security, corrections, or related public safety experience required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a State of Florida Class “D” Security Officer License.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPI Certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain IAHSS Basic Certification or higher.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in supervision, incident command, documentation review, and employee coaching preferred.
  • One (1) year of supervisory, lead, or formal leadership experience preferred.
  • Healthcare security experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, incident management, training support, and operational decision-making preferred.
  • Must obtain IAHSS Supervisor Certification within 12 months of promotion or appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides security services to ensure order and safety of patients, visitors and hospital personnel.
  • Escorts for visitors, employees, and students upon request.
  • Patrols all areas of the hospital internally and externally on foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle 24 hours a day in all weather conditions.
  • Provides key assists to all areas of the hospital, including sensitive areas to authorized personnel.
  • Detects suspicious activities within the campus and handles the situations appropriately.
  • Reports criminal activity to supervisor and law enforcement, as appropriate.
  • Investigates accident scenes, searches for and preserves evidence; investigates and interviews witnesses; makes oral and written reports; responds to varying situations with tact and diplomacy and deals with stressful, hostile or irrational person(s), whether due to physical or mental disability, drugs, or socio-economic differences or other factors and recommends legal action if needed.
  • Assists medical staff with the enforcement of Baker Act (F.S. 394.463) and Marchman Act (F.S. 397.675-397.6775) patients with the use of approved medical restraints as requested by physicians under Florida Statutes.
  • Works with law enforcement/correction officers dealing with patient/prisoner intake and status during the duration of their stay in the hospital. In addition officers will assist the Patient Care Coordinator with securing the status of non-publicity/high risk patients.
  • Supervises Security Officers on assigned shifts and provides for the protection and security of hospital assets, patients, visitors, employees, and guests.
  • Serves as a first-line supervisor and operational escalation point responsible for maintaining order, supporting training, promoting accountability, and ensuring consistency in shift operations.
  • Maintains order, discipline, and security within assigned areas, including in the absence of the shift Captain.
  • Supervises Security Officers on assigned shifts and assists with post assignments, staffing needs, and daily operational coordination.
  • Assists with the training of new officers and ongoing training of current officers.
  • Assists with emergency drills, incident command support, and coordinated response efforts during critical incidents.
  • Assists with officer performance, conduct, training compliance, and operational readiness.
  • Conducts shift briefings, reinforces expectations, and ensures officers are equipped to perform assigned duties.
  • Responds to and manages significant incidents, ensuring appropriate notification, scene control, documentation, and escalation.
  • Communicates appropriate information regarding patient and non-patient needs to Security team members and hospital staff.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and professional standards at all times.
  • Supports performance coaching, corrective action, and leadership follow-up as directed.
  • Monitors compliance with departmental procedures, service standards, and hospital policies.
  • Assists with documentation review, shift issue resolution, and follow-up actions related to incidents and officer performance.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with organizational policy and applicable standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in continual review of Security policies and procedures and recommends operational improvements.
  • Works with patients, visitors, staff, and leadership to resolve concerns and service issues.
  • Manages interactions involving patients, visitors, and employees under extreme stress in a calm and professional manner.
  • Supports leadership communication, shift continuity, and departmental accountability initiatives.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.
  • Serves as the backup Department timekeeper.
