About The Position

Exponent is seeking a Security-Focused Embedded Systems Engineer/Evaluator for its Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Practice in Menlo Park, CA. This role involves working within a team to test and troubleshoot secure identity credentials and other security peripherals like smart cards, focusing on identity management and authentication. The position requires assessing materials, components, and systems against standards for durability, reliability, quality, interoperability, performance, and security. Responsibilities include testing against environmental exposures such as repeated bending, UV sunlight, chemicals, X-rays, radio-frequency interrogation, fault-injection, and power attacks. The role encompasses both physical and digital aspects of devices and systems, with work conducted in the office, in the field, and in the lab.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong hands-on engineering, lab, instrumentation, and research abilities
  • Problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with and an interest in hardware security, network communications and security, cryptography
  • Ability to learn new computer languages if needed
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship and possession of or ability to obtain a DoD security clearance (required for U.S. Government contracts)

Nice To Haves

  • Software experience in one or more of the following languages: C/C++, Python, Java, Swift
  • Experience with coding and troubleshooting Arduino or similar devices
  • Ability to perform instrumentation, troubleshooting, and potentially creation of electro-mechanical components, test fixtures, and equipment
  • Ability to test systems and components for reliability, durability, and security
