Security Engineer Lead, Security Foundations

Meta•Washington, DC
•$271,000 - $347,000

About The Position

Meta's Security Foundations organization is a first line of defense that owns controls for managing security risk across the company. The Security Engineer Lead scopes, designs, and champions security solutions company-wide across multiple technical domains. This is a breadth role: domain engineering leaders and managers own their individual areas, while this position sets technical direction across them and addresses problems that span domains. The role influences Identity and Access Management, Cryptography and Data Security, Product Identity and Access, AI Security, Cloud Security, and Asset Management. The work spans Meta products and custom technology, commercial software such as Active Directory, and commercial IaaS/PaaS services. The position partners with a cross-functional organization of engineers, analysts, and product managers, as well as hundreds of engineers across Meta. It requires familiarity with security best practices and relevant regulatory frameworks, and the ability to translate between those frameworks and technical engineering teams. In the first year, success means establishing a defensible company-wide view of high-risk items with named owners and detailed threat models; delivering at least one shared platform or control adopted broadly enough to measurably improve the company's risk posture; and credibly representing security tradeoffs to VP- and C-level leaders so decisions are made.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Deep technical expertise in at least one supported domain and demonstrated ability to become credible quickly in unfamiliar domains.
  • Significant experience driving large cross-company engineering initiatives.
  • Experience managing security risk and navigating the tradeoff between security and friction in a large organization.
  • Experience communicating and influencing across functions to drive solutions.
  • Ability to operate in high-ambiguity environments and balance technical solution design with complex business processes and requirements.
  • Hands-on engineering experience and ability to lead across a blended Security Engineering and Software Engineering organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with identity and access management, cryptographic systems, and massively scaled infrastructure.
  • Experience securing AI/ML systems or agentic workloads.
  • Familiarity with SOX, SOC 2, or comparable control frameworks and the engineering work required to satisfy them.
  • Experience leading security work across both production (Linux) and corporate (Windows, Active Directory, SaaS) environments.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for security solutions and platforms shared across the company, working through Security Engineering, Security Analyst, and Software Engineering teams.
  • Determine the highest-risk items across the supported domains company-wide, then lead development of detailed threat models and solutions.
  • Define how AI agents are identified, authorized, and audited across Meta's infrastructure.
  • Navigate tradeoffs between security and friction or cost so the company can move quickly and securely.
  • Drive solution design, including technical architecture, and lead implementation as needed.
  • Build partnerships across security, infrastructure, corporate engineering, and legal, translating ambiguous business and regulatory requirements into well-articulated tradeoffs.
  • Represent security tradeoffs credibly to senior leadership, including VPs and C-level executives such as the CTO and CISO, to drive decisions.
