About The Position

Assists supervisors, director and pathologists in continuing quality improvement statistical data collection and performance indicators. Responsible for the management and coordination of the Point of Care Testing (POCT) program throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related Laboratory science field with ASCP certification required (or eligible; required to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • 4 years of technical experience in a clinical laboratory setting required.
  • Qualification as Technical Consultant as defined by CLIA ’88 required.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication, problem-solving, team building and critical thinking skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served.
  • Able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient group.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous point-of-care testing experience, supervisory experience and knowledge of CLIA and CAP regulatory guidelines preferred.
  • IDPH POC certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates staff education and training.
  • Monitors new staff training and competency.
  • Oversees all student education and clinical programs associated with the CGH Laboratory.
  • Provides oversight of all training and CEU requirements for the Laboratory staff.
  • Assumes the role as the student liaison for the CGH Laboratory.
  • Assists with providing CEU programs and materials for the Laboratory staff.
  • Screens any new training programs and/or changes to existing programs.
  • Communicates with affiliated schools and program directors providing: requirements for students, changes in the program, incidents associated with or affecting students or the program, and reports on student progress.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to all POCT, and all licensed non-laboratory staff performing such testing, including annual competency requirements.
  • Teaches laboratory methods, theory and instrumentation.
  • Coordinates testing education to include required training and competency testing for non-laboratory staff.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and conducting on going Performance Improvement (PI) and Quality Control (QC) programs for the Laboratory.
  • Serves on hospital teams and projects relating to Quality Assurance.
  • Ensures that all regulatory and accreditation standards and requirements are consistently met with proper documentation of all testing.
  • Adheres and serves as a resource to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA ’88) regulations and CAP standards.
  • Prepares for and participates in all applicable inspections.
  • Responsible for coordination of the blood glucose testing program as well as all other point of care tests on the patient floors and all off-site clinic locations, quality control (QC), policy development, education and training.
  • Establishes, revises and monitors policies and procedures, checklists, competency tests, direct observation forms, logs for quality control and quality assurance reports.
  • Compiles and reviews all monthly data of audits and QC from off-sites and hospital laboratory and provides such reports to the Medical Director.
  • Maintains Joint Commission accreditation through the use of quality control documentation, method validation and proper record keeping.
  • Performs monthly random clinic audits, including travel to offsites, to assess compliance.
  • Maintains the operator certification files to include documentation of all CLIA certificates and updates changes in operator names and status as necessary.
  • Provides management of POCT studies to include performing validation and correlation studies on all POC devices according to established protocols, developing audits for and reviewing QC and maintenance records for all test sites.
  • Keeps up to date and informs personnel of any manufacturer changes in procedures.
  • If applicable, orders, distributes and reviews Proficiency testing materials and responds to exception reports.
  • Effectively communicates and helps maintain excellent rapport among Laboratory, Physicians, nursing staff and other hospital/ clinic departments.
  • Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.
  • Helps to identify problems, offer solutions and participate in their resolution.
  • Establishes a strong working relationship with vendors and IT system analysts, implementing and maintaining connectivity for POCT where applicable.
  • Confers with Bio-Med as appropriate for troubleshooting and repair.
  • Analyzes and interprets results, determines appropriate action for abnormal and atypical results.
  • Communicates results to clinician.
  • Incorporates Patient Experience and Quality Programs by holding all staff accountable for ensuring proper patient identification and efficient documentation.
  • Maintains timely and accurate quality and productivity monitors.
  • Investigates and documents any exceptions in service, accuracy or timeliness and follows up with appropriate customer service recovery response.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned by the director.
