About The Position

The role of the secondary social studies teacher is to develop in each student an appreciation of American Ideals and cultural heritage; to develop proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to motivate each student to understand and exercise his rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a citizen; to develop understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors which influence the development of world regions; and to encourage students to develop sound opinions based on the study of facts concerning the operation of political and economic systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a secondary social studies teacher with the appropriate licensure code number.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background checks.
  • Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches skills, knowledge and understanding through courses in social studies to secondary students, utilizing course guidelines aligned with Arkansas teaching/ learning standards and other appropriate curriculum pacing guides in teaching individual course content.
  • Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Assists students in developing knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American governmental and economic problems against the background of geographical environment and history of the area being studied.
  • Makes available to students current material from the mass media; plans and guides discussions of current problems against background of geographical environment and history of area being studied.
  • Assists students in developing knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education, and living standards of the people.
  • Encourages students to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, national and world problems.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervises students in and out-of-classroom during the school day.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Maintains professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
