About The Position

The Secondary Counselor will help students overcome problems that impede learning and assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature, responsible individuals. This role involves working with students individually and in groups, collaborating with teachers and staff, and communicating with parents. The counselor will also play a key role in course selection, scheduling, college admissions, and financial aid coordination.

Requirements

  • As set by state certification authorities and/or North Central Association
  • School Counselor Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving educational and occupational plans in terms of such evaluation.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
  • Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the guidance department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  • Recognize student needs, and refer, when appropriate, to the persons who can best help with their problems.
  • Work with staff to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Encourage students to participate in school and community activities.
  • Register students to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  • Confer with parents when necessary.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships, and provide student information to colleges and potential employers upon student and/or parent request.
  • Provide for his own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
  • Assist students in course selection, scheduling, and schedule changes.
  • Procure and distribute applications for college admissions tests, and other testing when appropriate.
  • Coordinate with each other to assist the orderly transition of students from Middle School to High School.
  • Development of the master schedule of classes.
  • Coordinate all phases of student financial aid programs.
  • Maintain and update credit checks on all students.
  • Coordinate correspondence course selection and enrollment, and supervise the examinations.
  • Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  • Assist in referral and placement of students with special needs.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the principal or assistant principals.

  • Counselor: + $1850 Stipend
  • Placement on the salary schedule is based on the degree and length of experience directly related to this position.
  • Successful candidates with more than 10 years experience may be eligible for placement beyond the 10 steps depicted in this job posting.
