About The Position

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Second Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a 3800 therm/hour steam plant and 152 therm/hour chilling plant. Acting as a Shift Engineer, the successful incumbent must possess strong technical knowledge of central utility plant operations and demonstrate sound judgment in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment. This first-class plant operates 24/7; therefore, rotating shifts, including 12-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime, are required.

Requirements

  • A valid Second Class Power (Operating) Engineer Certificate
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating large utility or central energy plants
  • Experience with gas/oil-fired boiler systems and centrifugal chiller plants
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines and air compressors
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in an institutional setting (e.g. campus, healthcare, or district energy environments)
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS), DCS, or SCADA systems
  • Strong understanding of energy efficiency and plant optimization processes
  • Additional technical certifications or safety training considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe and efficient delivery of utility services to the campus community
  • Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and operational checks on the plant systems
  • Troubleshoot and respond to operational, mechanical, and system issues
  • Maintain logbooks, records, permits, and safety documentation accurately
  • Ensure compliance with TSSA regulations, environmental standards, and safety procedures
  • Follow all University policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment
  • Collaborate with maintenance staff, contractors, and other departments to support reliable plant operations
  • Respond to plant emergencies and support planned shutdowns/maintenance
  • Associated duties as assigned
