Utah State Parks is hiring seasonal employees to support park operations across the state. Seasonal employees play an important role in providing excellent customer service, maintaining park facilities and grounds, supporting public safety, and helping visitors enjoy Utah’s State Parks. Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to safely operate State vehicles.
  • Successfully pass a fingerprint and national criminal history background check.
  • Be able to operate computers and internet-based programs.
  • Provide professional and courteous customer service.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Work outdoors in extreme and adverse weather conditions, including heat, wind, snow, ice, and rain.
  • Work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, holidays, evenings, and other shifts based on park needs.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Walk over rough and uneven terrain.
  • Frequently bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and perform physical tasks.
  • Repeatedly lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to operate a variety of hand tools and groundskeeping equipment.
  • Perform considerable and strenuous physical work.
  • Frequently climb, bend, crouch, crawl, dig, shovel, plant, trim, and work in restricted areas.
  • Follow established safety practices when working around equipment, machinery, and chemicals.
  • Applicant must be willing to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, July 24 and Labor Day) mandatory.
  • Applicants must be self-motivated, honest, able and willing to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
  • Applicant must be able to work alone and as a contributing member of a team.
  • Applicants must be willing to work in an outdoor setting, communicate well with others and be able to maintain professionalism while in potentially stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Cash handling or point-of-sale experience.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience working in parks, recreation, outdoor settings, or visitor services.
  • Experience providing educational or interpretive programs.
  • Experience in landscaping, grounds care, or facility maintenance.
  • Experience operating lawn and groundskeeping equipment.
  • Experience with sprinkler and irrigation systems.
  • Experience using pesticides and herbicides.
  • Utah Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Experience working in parks, recreation areas, campgrounds, or similar outdoor environments.
  • Watercraft-Savvy applicants with an understanding of boat types and internal water systems (ballast tanks, live wells, cooling systems, etc.).
  • Pursuing a degree in Biology, Fisheries, Natural Resources or Criminal Justice.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to park visitors.
  • Greet visitors, answer questions, provide park information, and respond to visitor concerns.
  • Operate entrance stations, visitor centers, and gift shops.
  • Sell park passes, permits, and gift shop merchandise.
  • Handle cash and credit card transactions.
  • Answer phones and provide park information.
  • Maintain gift shop inventory, merchandise displays, and stocking.
  • Clean and maintain campgrounds, restrooms, yurts, visitor centers, and other park facilities.
  • Assist with housekeeping and routine park maintenance.
  • Assist with or present educational and interpretive programs.
  • Perform light trail maintenance and repair.
  • Assist with special events and other park programs.
  • Assist with search and rescue operations, emergency response, and other public safety duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties necessary to support park operations.
  • Mow, rake, water, fertilize, and maintain lawns and landscaped areas.
  • Plant, transplant, water, fertilize, and trim flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Maintain campgrounds, day-use areas, trails, and other public areas.
  • Pick up litter and help maintain clean and safe park grounds.
  • Clean and maintain restrooms, yurts, campsites, and other park facilities.
  • Assist with sprinkler and irrigation system maintenance.
  • Operate hand tools, lawnmowers, trimmers, snow blowers, and other groundskeeping equipment.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance of groundskeeping equipment.
  • Perform light trail construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Remove snow and assist with seasonal weather-related maintenance.
  • Assist with the application of herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, and other approved chemical compounds when properly trained and authorized.
  • Assist with special events, park projects, and other operational needs.
  • Aid in implementing the Utah Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan, with particular attention given to preventing the spread of Quagga and Zebra Mussels in Utah’s waterways.
  • Interview boaters and educate them about the threat of Aquatic Invasive Species.
  • Collect and enter data.
  • Inspect boats for the presence of AIS or standing water.
  • Assess biological risk that watercraft may pose on Utah’s Waters.
  • Decontaminate boats and equipment with a hot water/high volume sprayer.
