About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking four Seasonal Wildland Firefighters to join the Farmington Fire Department. This is a seasonal, part-time position with a work location in Fire Operations. The role involves performing firefighting activities, including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks. The firefighter will serve on a Wildland Fire Engine and may work independently or as part of a crew. Duties include driving the engine to fire locations, operating fire pumps, maintaining specialized equipment, constructing fire lines, maintaining fire equipment and facilities, performing fuel reduction activities, and performing fire hydrant maintenance. The position also involves presenting community safety programs and operating communication equipment. Attendance at work is essential, including extended deployments outside the region. Qualified individuals may serve as Incident Commander on initial attack.

Requirements

  • Successfully pass firefighter entrance exam.
  • Successfully pass interview panel(s).
  • Successfully completes an arduous level pack test per NWCG guidelines.
  • Pass an extensive background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
  • Have a valid High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Must be able to obtain a driver's license applicable to Fire Department apparatus.
  • Be able to read and write the English language.
  • Have a working knowledge of driver safety, CEVO class preferred.
  • Must have ICS 100, 200.
  • Must pass the Arduous Work Capacity Test per NWCG standards.
  • Must be available 24/7 during the hired work period for in City and out of the area deployments.
  • Must be able to meet the NWCG standard for Firefighter Type 2.
  • Have the ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance for prolonged periods of time under extreme conditions (heights, heat, cold or smoke).
  • Have the ability to act effectively in emergent and stressful situations.
  • Have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Have the ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • CEVO class preferred for driver safety knowledge.
  • Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on the highest verified formal education achieved (0.5 point for an Associate's Degree, 1 point for a Bachelor's Degree, and 1.5 points for a Master's Degree or higher; based on a 100 point grading scale).
  • A Military preference point will be awarded to candidates based on submission of a qualifying DD214 (1 point, based on a 100 point grading scale).
  • A preference point will be awarded to candidates based on current EMT licensure (1 point, based on a 100 point grading scale).
  • Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on current wildland certifications at time of hire (1 point each for S-131, S-212, S-215, and S-290 based on a 100 point grading scale).
  • Future preference points will be awarded to candidates that are testing for full-time employment as a firefighter with the Farmington Fire Department (2 points on a 100 point scale).

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Serves as a Wildland Firefighter on a Wildland Fire Engine.
  • Works both independently and as a crew to perform engine operational duties in the suppression of wildland and prescribed fires.
  • Drives engine to fire locations in consideration of safety of crew and equipment, and how the equipment can be best used for control and mop-up operations.
  • Personally performs and may direct others in starting fire pump, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment for effective use of water and additives.
  • Has knowledge of maintaining specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface situations.
  • Qualified individuals may serve as Incident Commander on initial attack.
  • Will serve in a hand crew capacity to construct fire line with hand and power tools.
  • Maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
  • Performs minor repairs to department equipment and apparatus.
  • Performs fuel reduction activities and/or other wildland fire mitigation projects as assigned.
  • Performs fire hydrant maintenance, inspection and record keeping.
  • Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
  • Must maintain NWCG Wildland Red Card Certification.
  • Attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, wildland firefighting and related subjects.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms.
  • Operates computer, radio and other communication equipment.
  • Presents programs to the community on safety and fire prevention topics.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the City.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function of this position to include extended deployments outside of the region.
  • May assist to coordinate or instruct other department personnel, as assigned.
