Job Overview The Seasonal Float Fabricator contributes to the construction of floats, props, and other scenic elements for Macy’s iconic events, including the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Spring Flower Shows, 4th of July Fireworks, Santaland, and other seasonal elements.

Requirements

  • Knowledge or experience in one of the following: carpentry, welding, painting, or sculpting is required
  • Ability to work as a carpenter, welder, sculptor, or painter on floats and other studio projects
  • Ability to read scale drawings and use scale models
  • Ability to multitask and collaborate with multiple artists and builders
  • Ability to perform "professional level" finish work on all projects
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be able to work in a production shop environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to draft reports and other communications; present to management and internal and external business partners; interpret technical documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to translate drawings to material, cut lists, and orders.
  • This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, standing, and reaching with arms and hands.
  • Involves standing for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 50 lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders.
  • May involve reaching above eye level.
  • Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge of welding/metal fabrication and general rigging is a plus
  • Knowledge or experience in electrics, plumbing, and hydraulics is a plus
  • Experience in theater sets, construction, or display shop a plus

Responsibilities

  • Works as a welder, fabricator, on floats and other studio projects
  • Acts as crew member on installations, set ups and take downs.
  • Acts as a crew member for parade set up and other events as needed
  • Acts as a crew member for the installation and implementation of special projects: Holiday Displays, Marquee Elements and Flower Show
  • Collaborates with the Production and Engineering teams on building methods and execution
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Shop Manager and/or production manager
