About The Position

Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) is hiring a Seasonal Substation/Apparatus Technician. The Seasonal Substation/Apparatus Technician maintains and installs control equipment, load management equipment, metering equipment (substation infrastructure) and performs power quality studies, in a safe, accurate and timely manner with qualified personnel supervision. This position is anticipated to start working in May. Normal hours will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with emergency work on holidays, weekends or off hours, if needed.

Requirements

  • Works outdoors with physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions.
  • Frequently lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally lifts items that weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • Shovels dirt, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects work for safe connections.
  • Ability to work at night, on weekends and holidays to install line equipment or perform load management repairs, and metering issues, if needed.
  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug screens.
  • This position is also subject to random drug screening during employment.
  • Both screenings include cannabis and hemp-derived products.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years college or vocational school in Electrical Maintenance, Electric Utility Technician or 2 years’ experience in equivalent field.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned work that includes the operation, installation, maintaining, and troubleshooting of line/substation equipment, substation test equipment, load management equipment, stray voltage equipment.
  • Provides guidance to genset accounts.
  • Performs testing and diagnosis of power quality problems and stray voltage issues.
  • Perform accurate monthly inspections of substation and line equipment.
  • Assist with installation, programming, testing, maintenance, and documentation of line and substation apparatus.
  • Conduct testing on power transformers, protection systems, and associated equipment per manufacturer and MVEC standards, documenting performance and ensuring functionality.
  • Support development, programming, testing, and improvement of SCADA systems for accurate and reliable operation.
  • Communicate testing results and recommendations to supervisors and engineering staff.
  • Assist line personnel with installation of multi-phase transformers and general plant maintenance as needed.
  • Follow and promote all safety policies, procedures, and training to ensure safe operations for personnel and the public.
  • Maintain and install necessary software/programs to support system operations.
  • Continuously develop knowledge of MVEC operations, industry codes (REA, NEC), and internal systems.
  • Contribute to team objectives by completing work safely, reliably, and efficiently, and recommend process improvements without compromising safety or service quality.
