About The Position

This is an unclassified, temporary appointment, not to exceed 1000 hours (Hours may vary based on operational need). The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) oversees building and maintaining the nation's 5th largest interstate system and the 3rd largest number of bridges. The ODOT Mechanic Trainee receives training in the performance of preventative maintenance and service on cars, trucks, and equipment, and assists with performing minor repairs or other related mechanical work. This role involves learning to service ODOT’s Central Hydraulic System, snowplow lighting systems, salt spreading systems, heavy/heaviest equipment, snoopers, vactor jets, and Global Positioning System/Automatic Vehicle Locator (GPS/AVL) systems. Responsibilities also include checking fuel pump readings, maintaining fuel pumps and pumping areas, recording fuel output, receiving fuel deliveries, completing forms, inventorying supplies, ordering, receiving, measuring, and sampling fuel/supplies, operating radios, mowing and trimming lawns, providing emergency service to vehicles, delivering or picking up vehicles, and providing assistance, information, and support to higher-level mechanics and co-workers.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division
  • 6 months of training or 6 months of experience in automotive mechanics
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code

Responsibilities

  • Receives Training in performance of preventative maintenance and service on cars, trucks, and equipment
  • Assists with performing minor repairs or other related mechanical work
  • Assists with performing routine service & maintenance (e.g., checks fluid levels &/or batteries; lubricates joints, hinges &/or latches; changes oil & replaces filters; replaces spark plugs; performs tire changes; services the cooling system; dispenses fuel &/or fluids as needed)
  • Assists with &/or services vehicles in field or on road (e.g., performs minor repairs &/or transports parts; cleans garage area; maintains records of service or maintenance performed; operates tow truck, dump truck &/or snowplow; washes vehicles or equipment/heavy equipment; pumps fuel)
  • Learns to service ODOT’s Central Hydraulic System, snowplow lighting systems, salt spreading systems, heavy/heaviest equipment, snoopers, vactor jets, & Global Positioning System/Automatic Vehicle Locator (i.e., GPS/AVL) systems.
  • Checks fuel pump or stick readings to determine amount of fuel remaining in storage tanks & cleans & maintains fuel pumps & pumping area
  • Records fuel output & computes remaining levels
  • Receives fuel deliveries & completes forms
  • Inventories supplies
  • Orders, receives, measures & samples fuel &/or supplies
  • Operates radio
  • Mows & trims lawn
  • Provides emergency service to vehicles
