About The Position
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Seasonal Maintenance Worker for the Trails & Greenways section of the Parks and Recreation Department. This role involves performing natural and paved trail and greenway maintenance, including activities such as trash collection, mowing, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, concrete work, light construction projects, and amenity maintenance. Additional duties may include leading volunteer groups, snow removal, and other emergency tasks. The position may require night and weekend hours. Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One to three months of experience and/or training in trailbuilding and maintenance, landscape and turf maintenance, construction or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed
Responsibilities
- Participates in the work of a crew involved in the cleaning and maintenance of trails, greenways, and blueways.
- Performs trash collection, mowing, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, light construction projects, and amenity maintenance.
- Performs work in the completion of greenway and blueway maintenance and trail construction.
- Operates a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including Toro 5900, Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat, mini skid steer, chainsaws, trail work tools, and tractors.
- Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day’s assignment.
- Loads/unloads materials such as soil, mulch, gravel, etc.
- Performs minor repairs of greenways, blueways, and trails.
- Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal.
- Follows established safety procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
