About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for the safety of all members and guests using the beaches. This role involves maintaining the beach area according to state and Silver Bay standards, ensuring cleanliness, and controlling the beach area by enforcing rules. The position requires good judgment to determine when the beach is unsafe for swimmers and maintaining accurate attendance records. The lifeguard will also check equipment weekly and participate in a training program that includes daily conditioning and review of lifeguard skills. Demonstrates skill in using rescue equipment and providing swimming instruction. As a 24-hour operation, all staff may be asked to work weekends, evenings, night shifts and/or holidays.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current YMCA or equivalent Red Cross Lifeguard certification or be willing to attain one.
  • Must hold a professional's First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to attain one.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to enforce rules in a professional and positive manner are required.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of people representing all social and economic segments of the community.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the beach area according to both State and Silver Bay standards.
  • Maintains cleanliness of all beaches; rakes sand and lawn, removes trash, cleans rafts, etc.
  • Maintains control of the beach area; commands respect of swimmers; willing to discipline individuals not obeying beach rules.
  • Uses good judgment to determine when beach is unsafe for swimmers, i.e., electrical storm, extremely high winds, etc.
  • Keeps accurate attendance records of members/guests using the beach
  • Checks equipment weekly, including rafts, stands, rescue tubes, and first aid supplies.
  • Participates in a training program designed by the Waterfront Team Leader, including daily conditioning, and review of lifeguard skills, including rescue tube, backboard, rescue board, escapes, and emergency drills.
  • Demonstrates skill in use of fins, masks, and snorkel used for a deep water search and rescue.
  • Develops skills in using row boats in rescue situations.
  • Exercises appropriate judgment when providing swimming instruction.
  • Develops skills in recognizing potential accidents, use of SCUBA diver flags, and executing rescues.
  • Performs other duties, as requested.
