About The Position

Seasonal Laborers perform manual work assisting with Department of Public Works projects in the Streets, Sewer, and Forestry, Parks & Cemeteries Divisions. Four seasonal positions are available. The approximate employment period is November 1, 2026, through May 1, 2027, for up to six months. The schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The hourly rate is $19.00. There are no benefits with temporary seasonal laborer positions.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in the work.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
• Ability to operate power hand tools, such as power lawn mowers, tampers, jackhammers, and similar equipment.
• Massachusetts Class D driver's license required.
• Moderate to strenuous physical effort is generally required.
• Eyesight and hearing must be within or correctable to normal ranges.

Nice To Haves

• CDL experience preferred.
• Residency within 15 miles of the physical boundaries of the City of Northampton is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist with Department of Public Works projects and perform other related work as required.
• Mow grass, trim shrubs, rake, and seed.
• Perform minor maintenance on equipment, including greasing and changing oil, spark plugs, and filters.
• Plow roads and sidewalks using light trucks, a tracked vehicle, and shovels.
• Work in other DPW divisions as needed or during emergencies.
