About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled and manual labor work in the maintenance of the City’s roads, sidewalks, and utilities, or the collection and disposal of the City’s refuse. This role involves performing general laboring tasks in the Sanitation Department, including cleaning and performing preventive maintenance on equipment, operating trucks and equipment, inspecting for safety hazards, flagging traffic, observing safety rules, loading and unloading debris and refuse, dealing with the public at the recycling center, sorting and baling recyclables, operating and maintaining a limb chipping machine, and supplying cones for safety.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Responsibilities

Performs general laboring tasks in the Sanitation Department.
Participates in cleaning equipment and performing preventive maintenance; makes minor repairs to equipment.
Operates a variety of trucks and equipment in performing tasks.
Inspects equipment and assigned work area for safety hazards.
Flags traffic.
Observes all safety rules and guidelines.
Loads, hauls, and unloads debris and refuse.
Walks behind or rides on a sanitation truck on assigned route; loads refuse bags from street curb into truck; reports any violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
Deals with the public at the recycling center.
Sorts materials for recycling; bales recyclables.
Notifies the supervisor when inventory reaches capacity.
Locks and secures the recycling facility; maintains a log of visitors at the recycling center.
Operates and maintains the limb chipping machine; pulls limbs, cuts logs, and hauls limbs by hand.
Supplies cones for safety; cleans the area after working.
Performs other related duties as required.
