About The Position

Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment. This role involves firing boilers, regulating fuel flow, manipulating valves, maintaining water levels and fires for optimal efficiency, performing repairs and maintenance on boiler components, measuring fuel consumption, cleaning boiler rooms, making emergency repairs, performing simple tests on boiler water, operating boiler water conditioning apparatus, obtaining and safeguarding equipment, keeping records of boiler operations, and potentially operating and maintaining air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. The position also includes cleaning and maintaining furnace rooms, reporting operational issues, adjusting drafts, and performing general cleaning and minor repairs after the firing season. Additionally, the role requires learning to use electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems.

Requirements

  • Possession of a boiler operator’s license of the appropriate grade and type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment.
  • Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment.
  • Fuels boilers by regulating automatic stokers, hand firing, and regulating the flow of oil in oil burners.
  • Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
  • Ensures that water is maintained in the boiler at the required level.
  • Maintains the fires in the boilers at the proper thickness and regulates the draft to obtain the most efficient results.
  • Performs work involved in repair, maintenance, and installation of grate units, tubes, and caps, and in turbining boilers.
  • Measures and records amounts of fuel used.
  • Washes boiler and pump rooms and does other work to maintain the areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines and equipment in good operating condition.
  • Makes simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity, and alkalinity and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment.
  • Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Keeps essential records and files of the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
  • May operate and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Sweeps and cleans furnace rooms, keeps flues clean, picks up trash adjacent to furnace rooms and places in containers, and keeps trash compounds clean at all times.
  • Becomes familiar with the normal operations of blowers motors and regulators and reports promptly any that are not operating normally.
  • Reports breakage of or damage to furnaces or heaters promptly.
  • Notifies proper individuals if anyone in anyway interferes with the operation of the furnaces or heaters.
  • Reports to the proper individual whenever the fuel supply is running low.
  • Adjusts drafts, oils pumps, electric motors, and other boiler room equipment.
  • When firing season terminates, sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors.
  • Cleans walls and ceilings, dusts and polishes furniture, polishes metal work, and cleans woodwork, windows, and lavatories.
  • Makes minor repairs, cuts and trims grass and shrubbery, and acts as watchman.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
