About The Position

Axalta Coating Systems is seeking a scientist to join their General Industrial Coatings Technology Group in Huntsville, Al. The Scientist will advance the fundamental understanding of coatings technology in support of Axalta’s growth initiatives by aligning development testing with strategic business needs. Development work will be utilized to support product design, development and enhancements for technologies offered. The role of Scientist will report into the Team Manager – Liquid Industrial.

Requirements

  • BS/MS/PhD Degree in a science related field with applicable experience
  • Must have at least 2 years of practical R&D experience
  • Should have a fundamental understanding of coatings technology, including knowledge of resins, additives and pigments used in exterior (and interior) coating systems
  • Ability to develop and/or implement coating characterization testing methods, calibrate & run instrumentation and interpret results
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), problem solving capabilities and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Willingness and ability to travel 5-10%

Nice To Haves

  • BS/MS/PhD Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Coatings
  • Prior experience with Waterborne coatings development is preferred
  • Prior experience with color development/pigment technologies in coatings is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interact with others in R&D, Sales and Marketing to validate new technologies in order to provide growth opportunities in traditional and adjacent markets
  • Work as an active member of cross functional project teams with Manufacturing, Product Management, IT and Sales
  • Development and optimization of coatings formulas for metal applications applied by spray though product testing to gain customer approval using appropriate design of experiments and statistical tools.
  • Scale-up and support of the formulas in the manufacturing area including establishment of specifications and test methods, fine tuning of the formula to allow first time OK quality and assist in problem solving production issues when appropriate.
  • Technical field support of the products in the customer facility. Specific areas include: participation in customer trials to assure optimal performance of the products, support of product launches and providing technical and laboratory support for customer issues.
  • Direct internal quality investigations; ensuring the results are translated in a meaningful way for internal and external distribution
  • Improve existing formulas and processes to streamline work across technical and operational platforms
