Axle is seeking a Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the Clinical Center (CC) located in Bethesda, MD.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in a scientific field.
  • Scientific knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry; ability to learn new techniques, and cell culture
  • Molecular biological theories and techniques to the work as well as analyzing and evaluating research findings
  • High level judgment and selectivity in applying theories, techniques and principles to research
  • Handling of small animals and skill in animal surgery and tissue dissection

Responsibilities

  • Independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.
  • Provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.
  • Develop animal model systems to support the overall mission of the CIO.
  • Select, devise, plan and execute preclinical experiments in the context of the laboratory overall research program.
  • Perform a variety of experimental procedures and preclinical studies of image-guided interventions investigations.
  • Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.
  • Evaluate new techniques, instruments, and software for potential incorporation into current SOP.
  • Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
  • Work with staff on assay design and method development using an array or experimentation.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use.
  • Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate space and facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.
  • Provide basic and advanced training in animal care and use procedures to staff.
  • Evaluates, analyzes and interprets research data, communicates results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
  • Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments.
  • Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.
  • Work with Principal Investigators in scheduling and prioritizing instrument usage.
  • Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia.
  • Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals; prepare PowerPoint presentations as appropriate.
  • Provides interpretation of results, guidance, and scientific support to the management team.
  • Search existing literature for new and/or relevant techniques.
  • Mentors junior level scientists.
  • Train staff in a wide variety of techniques used in the laboratory.
  • Investigate the safety and effectiveness of image guided interventions such as embolic therapies, thermal tumor ablation, cardiovascular devices and therapeutics, local or targeted drug delivery, combination products and targeting devices for the treatment of oncologic and vascular disease.
  • Support ideal functioning of the bench and imaging lab.
  • Interact with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, veterinarians and technicians in developing/ordering needed tools for projects.
  • Evaluate new types of experimental approaches and recommend changes to protocols based on knowledge of scientific literature, available facilities and research needs.
  • Determine experimental approaches to be applied in order to evaluate the hypotheses under investigation and for planning and carrying out those experiments.
  • Perform analysis and interpretation of the data to develop strategies for pursuing significant observation and for ensuring accuracy and reproducibility of results.
  • Interpret experimental techniques and procedures.
  • Search all pertinent literature and references.
  • Devise, modify and perform analyses.
  • Evaluate and interpret data and make modifications as needed.
  • Communicate results and methods in reports, presentations and manuscripts for peer reviewed publications and at local, national and international meetings.
  • Coordinate the training of laboratory personnel, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, students and others in specialized technologies.
