About The Position

In this full-time onsite role at Sullivan Park, you will apply technical expertise within the Characterization Sciences directorate to perform mechanical testing on Corning's products and materials. You will execute testing methods and procedures, operate equipment, and analyze, interpret, and report findings. As a technical contributor, you will assess the mechanical strength and reliability of glass, ceramics, and polymers to support research, development, and manufacturing efforts. Responsibilities include hands-on testing, failure analysis, reporting results, and developing novel testing methods. You will also partner with project groups to identify reliability needs and drive workstreams forward, collaborating closely with the mechanics, reliability, and fractography teams. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, Materials, or other applicable engineering degree OR Associate’s degree with 5+ years of experience
  • Strong mechanics knowledge and technical curiosity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with statistics and data analysis
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Nice To Haves

  • Previous lab experience
  • Statistical software: Minitab, JMP, OriginPro
  • MTS TestSuite/TestWorks, Instron Bluehill
  • 3D CAD, SolidWorks preferred
  • Data acquisition systems: ±10V systems, NI FlexLogger, Keyence Wave Logger
  • Strain analysis tools: Digital Image Correlation, Video Extensometer, Strain Gauge

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical testing on various materials and Corning products, analyzing and reporting results
  • Use strain monitoring equipment—including Digital Image Correlation, Video Extensometer, and strain gauges—to assess material behavior
  • Develop test plans and design experiments to assess and improve material mechanical reliability
  • Collect, review, and document test data and observations
  • Communicate technical information effectively to scientists and teams across Corning
