Scientist I, Computational Biology - Contract

Editas Medicine•Cambridge, MA
•$64 - $69

About The Position

Editas Medicine’s Genomics and Bioinformatics team seeks a motivated, collaborative scientist to support development and use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data-analysis pipelines for CRISPR gene-editing programs. The role contributes to analysis capabilities for research, preclinical-stage, and clinical-stage programs, using expertise in NGS data analysis, sequencing platforms, assay quality control, and data interpretation. The successful candidate will execute and optimize existing NGS analysis workflows and help develop and implement new methods. Potential analyses include targeted amplicon sequencing, off-target verification, long-read sequencing, and RNA sequencing. The scientist will work with teams across Research, Translational Sciences, Process Development, computational biology, informatics, and analytical development. They will communicate findings clearly, maintain thorough documentation, and contribute scientific input to project strategy and assay development.

Requirements

  • For Scientist I level: PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, biology, or a relevant computational discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with NGS data analysis, such as targeted amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, or RNA sequencing.
  • Programming and developer skills, such as Linux/Unix, Python, R, and git.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics packages and algorithms for NGS analysis, such as bowtie2, STAR, minimap2, samtools, and Bioconductor.
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills, including experience with electronic laboratory notebooks such as Benchling.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary, timeline-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with guide RNA sequencing.
  • Experience with cloud computing such as AWS, Docker, Snakemake, and agentic AI tools such as Claude Code.
  • Experience analyzing NGS data from CRISPR or other gene-editing modalities, including on-target editing, off-target editing, structural variants, or other editing outcomes.
  • Experience analyzing Oxford Nanopore sequencing data.
  • Experience analyzing guide RNA sequencing data from Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms.
  • Experience analyzing data from high-throughput targeted sequencing and multiplexed amplicon assays.
  • Experience supporting assay development in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sophisticated computational analyses of NGS data, applying critical thinking, published findings, and field best practices, and creating data-science visualizations.
  • Partner with computational biology, informatics, and analytical development teams to develop and maintain reproducible, usable, version-controlled, robust computational biology pipelines and workflows.
  • Define, troubleshoot, and optimize analysis specifications for novel NGS analyses and establish assay acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain well-documented workflows, author study reports, and provide technical documentation supporting research, analytical development, and regulatory activities.
  • Present scientific findings to audiences including senior leadership to inform therapeutic-program decisions.
  • Execute and optimize existing NGS data-analysis workflows and contribute to development and implementation of new analysis methods.
  • Collaborate with scientists across Research, Translational Sciences, Process Development, and other functions.
  • Contribute scientifically to project strategy and assay development.
