In this vital role, we are seeking a Scientist/Engineer to design, build, and support integrated laboratory automation platforms embedded within our Immunoengineering organization. This role is focused on automation and systems engineering, with an emphasis on designing and deploying new automation capabilities, while also taking end-to-end ownership of existing and legacy systems to ensure they remain reliable, maintainable, and fit-for-purpose. You will contribute to connecting these platforms into Amgen’s broader data, AI, and enterprise automation infrastructure, operating across the full system lifecycle—from concept and implementation to operation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Immunology, Immunoengineering, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or related field OR Master’s degree + 3+ years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s degree + 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with laboratory automation systems
  • Ability to design and support integrated systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotic platforms and automation
  • Programming experience (Python, C#, etc.)
  • Experience supporting production automation systems
  • Familiarity with LIMS / ELN and data pipelines
  • Exposure to AI/ML workflows
  • Strong systems-thinking mindset

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement end-to-end automated laboratory workflows
  • Integrate robotics, analytical instruments, and control software
  • Develop robust, modular, and fault-tolerant platforms
  • Prototype and deploy custom automation solutions
  • Own new and legacy automation systems
  • Ensure operational performance and uptime
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and workflows
  • Perform preventative maintenance and calibration
  • Improve or retire legacy systems
  • Translate workflows into scalable, repeatable processes
  • Optimize throughput, reliability, and reproducibility
  • Reduce manual intervention and variability
  • Integrate with LIMS / ELN and data systems
  • Ensure structured, high-quality data capture
  • Support AI/ML-driven workflows
  • Align with enterprise engineering standards
  • Contribute to scalable system architectures
  • Ensure interoperability and security
  • Partner with scientists and engineers
  • Translate biological requirements into engineered solutions
