About The Position

The Respiratory & Immunology (R&I) vision is to deliver life-changing products that advance world health and help fight and cure disease. R&I is a key therapeutic research area within AstraZeneca. This is a lab-based position within the growing in vivo Bioscience team in the R&I department, seeking a motivated scientist with hands-on in vivo skills and experience in immunology or a related discipline. The role will initially be based in Waltham, MA, with a move to new facilities in Kendall Square, Cambridge in October 2026. The scientist will focus on developing therapeutics for immune and autoimmune diseases using mouse models, generating preclinical and translational data, and driving technical excellence. Essential skills include multiparameter flow cytometry, multiplex cytokine read-outs, and qPCR. The role may involve implementing protocols outside of normal working patterns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, immunology or relevant discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience with an extensive proven track record of in vivo work.
  • Practical in vivo experience and experimental skills in the use of animal models and tissue processing including mice handling, injections (IP, IV, SC, ID), PO dosing, blood collection.
  • Tissue harvesting and processing for downstream analysis.
  • Experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques including RT-PCR, ELISA, multi-parameter flow cytometry and assay development.
  • Good understanding of pharmacology, physiology and immunology.
  • Analytical skills related to in vivo research and data analysis.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and develop ideas by incorporating the views of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across language, cultural, or other barriers.
  • Understanding of statistical methods, quality control including data reporting and archiving.

Nice To Haves

  • Immunology/autoimmune disease knowledge, including target and mechanism knowledge (e.g. SLE, arthritis, Sjogren’s).
  • Experience with humanized mice models.

Responsibilities

  • Generate preclinical and translational data in support of key portfolio programs.
  • Drive technical excellence in bioscience research.
  • Implement protocols over timelines that extend outside of normal working patterns.
  • Run disease and mechanistic models, including administering candidate drugs and collecting biological samples.
  • Maintain the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical compliance, as well as data integrity.
  • Design and develop disease-relevant in vivo models and biomarkers.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and interpretation of primary data.
  • Write reports and summaries.
  • Support drug discovery projects to meet their objectives by acting as an effective and creative team member.
