About The Position

Under the limited supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager, this position assists with the preparation, set up, break down, and clean-up of the biological science laboratories. The role involves following established procedures and complying with all safety regulations for various lab activities and experiments. The position also notes that eligible veterans and their spouses may claim Veterans’ Preference, and certain servicemembers may be eligible for waivers for postsecondary educational requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree (or equivalent combination of experience and education).
  • Typically three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting.
  • Hazardous material training.
  • Operational knowledge and understanding in area of responsibility (biology, microbiology, zoology, botany).
  • Strong knowledge, understanding and skills in area of responsibility, including concepts and principles of related areas and functions.
  • Ability to manage own work to job and performance standards.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member.
  • Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer systems, i.e. Microsoft Office Products as well as specialized computer systems.
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with employee and student populations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares labs according to the assigned functional discipline (e.g., anatomy, biology, zoology, botany, microbiology), including presentation of all materials required for activities or experiments such as glassware, benchtop equipment, media, living specimens, models, and chemical solutions.
  • Assists with the preparation of chemical solutions and media, which may include calculating concentrations, measuring, weighing, heating, cooling, dispensing, and using equipment like analytical balances and autoclaves.
  • Returns the lab to its pre-activity condition by cleaning and returning materials, sanitizing surfaces and supplies, and making minor repairs.
  • Assists the lab manager with maintaining samples of living organisms, including microorganisms using aseptic technique, protozoa, fruit flies, marine organisms, plants, and terrestrial arthropods.
  • Assists the lab manager with maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Disposes of all waste materials properly according to established safety and regulatory protocols.
  • Assists faculty with lab activities.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation by cleaning and performing testing/calibration before class.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
