About The Position

The Science Lab Supervisor oversees all laboratory operations supporting science courses each semester, including the management of laboratories, preparation rooms, storage and study areas, and the designated hazardous waste site. The role includes ordering materials and supplies, collaborating with the Department Chair on budget management, and preparing labs to ensure timely and accurate setup for instructional activities. In addition, the Science Lab Supervisor serves as the department’s Biological Hygiene Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer, ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and institutional safety regulations while maintaining a safe, efficient, and well-organized laboratory environment. This position operates in close coordination with the CT State Director of Environmental Health and Safety, ensuring alignment between academic laboratory operations and CT State environmental health and safety objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field together with two (2) or more years of related experience and one (1) or more years of supervisory experience; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.
  • Laboratory safety management, including hazardous waste, biological hygiene, and chemical hygiene compliance.
  • Scientific equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Budget management, procurement, and vendor coordination.
  • Laboratory preparation and organization to support instructional programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)

Nice To Haves

  • Formal certification or training in Chemical Hygiene Officer and/or Biological Safety Officer practices
