About The Position

Earthjustice's International Program is accepting applications for one part-time science extern for fall 2026. We are seeking undergraduate students who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment, and who are eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement through this externship. The successful candidate may work remotely within the U.S. or on a hybrid schedule from our San Francisco, CA office. The International Program partners with legal organizations in Latin America, Africa, Australia, and Indonesia to establish, strengthen, and enforce national and international legal protections for the environment, climate, and public health. The extern will work with staff scientists to analyze scientific and technical knowledge to develop analyses for legal challenges to fossil fuel projects.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate environmental science (or related field) program with an expected graduate date between December 2026 and May 2028.
  • Must be eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement through this externship.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and comfort navigating and learning new tools.
  • Outstanding research skills, including ability to conduct scientific literature reviews and basic quantitative data analyses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to present complex information to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Earthjustice’s values of Justice, Excellence, Inclusion, and Partnership.
  • Must commit to at least 10 hours/week for 10-12 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct discrete research for administrative comments and appeals, litigation, and campaign materials on energy projects and regulations.
  • Draft broader, long-term research memos on key emerging technical, economic, and/or policy issues within the energy transition.
  • Other duties may be assigned as part of the job’s requirements.
