About The Position

The school transportation aide assists students while they travel from school, ensuring their safety and well-being on the bus. They help students board and exit the vehicle, monitor behavior during transit, and provide support to children with special needs or mobility challenges. Transportation aides also communicate with drivers, school staff, and parents when needed and help maintain a safe, orderly environment throughout the route.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience working with children
  • Basic first aid/CPR knowledge
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record in accordance with the BPS’s acceptable guidelines.
  • Safe student loading/unloading procedures
  • Proper use of adaptive equipment
  • Student behavior management and de-escalation
  • Emergency evacuation procedures
  • Basic first aid and bloodborne pathogen awareness
  • Radio/cellular communication procedures
  • Understanding bus safety rules and transportation regulations
  • Documentation and incident reporting
  • Awareness of bullying prevention and pupil management

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree or higher preferred
  • Threat Assessment Training (available upon employment)
  • Restraint Training (available upon employment)
  • Completion of required annual transportation training (Ohio requires at least four hours yearly for drivers and aides)
  • Criminal background checks, including FBI/BCI screening

Responsibilities

  • Assisting students as they board and exit the bus safely
  • Monitoring student behavior and maintaining order during transit
  • Helping students with disabilities or special needs
  • Ensuring seat belts, harnesses, or child restraint systems are properly used
  • Communicating clearly with the bus driver about student needs or safety concerns
  • Supervising students at bus stops when required
  • Responding appropriately in emergencies, including evacuations and first aid situations
  • Maintaining awareness of student attendance and verifying correct drop-off locations
  • Providing behavioral support and conflict de-escalation when needed
  • Assisting younger children who may need extra guidance or reassurance
  • Following school district transportation policies, confidentiality rules, and safety regulations
  • Completing incident reports or documentation when necessary
  • Keeping aisles and exits clear for safety compliance
  • Supporting a calm, respectful environment for students
  • Using radios or communication devices to stay in contact with transportation staff
