About The Position

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of routine tasks assisting professional and clerical staff of Early Childhood programs, and performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Ability to work with and for pre-school aged children.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Good reading skills.
  • Light work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical demands include the ability to reach, handle, and finger objects.
  • Ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequent use of near and far visual acuity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with supervising children in an organizational setting is highly desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of Early Childhood program policies and practices.
  • Some knowledge of routine clerical procedures.
  • Some knowledge of Chicago Public Schools' rules and regulations.
  • Some skill in the operation of a typewriter and basic office equipment is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts home visits to recruit and register eligible children for Early Childhood programs.
  • Assists professional staff in assessing individual needs of enrolled children.
  • Assists teachers in planning daily classroom activities.
  • Contacts parents of students absent from school without approved causes to encourage regular attendance.
  • Recruits parents to serve as volunteers in Early Childhood programs.
  • Distributes teaching materials.
  • Takes and records attendance.
  • Maintains files of student records and reports.
  • Responds to routine telephone inquiries concerning Early Childhood programs.
  • Accompanies students, parents, and educational Staff on field trips.
  • Types simple and routine reports and records.
  • Operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce typewritten materials.
  • Refers parents to social service agencies as needed.
  • Assists teachers in making presentations and demonstrations to parents.
  • Assists in serving meals and performing basic sanitation duties.
  • Serves as a messenger by delivering materials to other school units.
  • May operate simple audio-visual equipment.
