Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of State and Federal laws, local ordinances, and policies of the Police Department.
  • Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment.
  • General knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures.
  • General knowledge of CALEA standards.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics.
  • Clear and concise report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen and have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action to be taken.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive, effective relationships both internally and externally with excellent customer service.
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification with Certification by the NC Criminal Justice Standards Commission.
  • Successful passing of Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT).
  • Minimum of two (2) years sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Valid NC Driver's License in Good Standing.
  • United States Citizen or Naturalized Citizen.

  • Some law enforcement training or experience is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe school environment, responds to incidents and emergencies, and investigates criminal activity occurring on school property.
  • Builds positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and administrators while serving as a mentor and law enforcement resource.
  • Provides safety and crime-prevention education and works with school personnel and community partners to address student and school safety concerns.
  • Patrols high and low crime areas, talking to people in the community, checking buildings and residences, apprehending offenders.
  • Investigates traffic accidents, using measurement devices and eyewitnesses accounts to determine violations, assist motorists, and talk to auto insurance companies and directs traffic flow as warranted and in emergencies.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior.
  • Completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
  • Identifies, pursues, and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal activity.
  • Serves criminal papers, locating people indicted, serving warrants, orders for arrest, and criminal summons.
  • Tracks people who have violated traffic laws, inspection laws, registration laws, and other traffic offenses.
  • Conducts criminal investigations, gathering information and evidence, taking photographs of crime scenes; talking to witnesses; conducting background investigations.
  • Prepares preliminary investigative reports, and other reports.
  • Assists state and federal prosecutors in court preparation; appearing and testifying in court.
  • Performs preliminary or detailed investigations of accidents or possible crimes.
  • Performs any and all related duties as required.
