About The Position

Under the supervision of an assigned administrator, perform duties in support of school outreach activities, including but not limited to: communicate with parents in English and Spanish regarding school attendance, academic and social adjustment of referred students; assist in promoting student and parent participation in school activities and in building and maintaining relations with community groups for purposes of generating resources that benefit District students and families.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
  • An equivalent of one year (1) of professional experience working in an instructional or community service program, performing community outreach and clerical support duties.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Speak, read and write in Spanish as demonstrated by passing a bilingual/bi-literate District administered proficiency examination.
  • Knowledge of District policies and State laws and regulations related to school enrollment and attendance.
  • Knowledge of cultural background of minority, ethnic and socio-economically disadvantaged groups.
  • Knowledge of community resources, including social welfare services and other pertinent pubic or private agencies.
  • Knowledge of correct use of English and Spanish, including spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Knowledge of telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluently and grammatically in Spanish and in English to translate written documents accurately and verbal dialogue from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English at an appropriate pace.
  • Ability to learn and apply rules and protocols of different school sites and District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directions given verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office word and excel to complete assigned work task.
  • Demonstrate mental acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Establish and maintain highly effective customer-focused working relationships with users, including administrators, teachers, students, other District and site staff, parents and community groups.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Be motivated to produce high quality work product.

  • Alternate variations of education/experience may be considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation in the examination process resulting in an eligibility list.
  • When appropriate additional work experience beyond the minimum requirement may be supplemented for required minimum education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to newcomer and currently enrolled students and families who are limited or unable to speak English with information on school and District guidelines, policies and procedures, and available program services and community resources.
  • Meet, confer with, and interview parents in the identification of family needs and issues; refer to or assist in locating and utilizing school and community services and resources.
  • Promote parent and child participation in school activities by ensuring dissemination and understanding of information on school or community flyers, staff memos or other pertinent correspondence.
  • Communicate school concerns to parents related to student truancy and attendance problems, behavior/attitude concerns, and health issues; advise parents on the importance of regular student attendance and District and State regulations on student attendance.
  • Serve as a liaison and facilitate communication between students, parents, administrators, teachers and other school staff by providing translation services (English to Spanish and Spanish to English) during meetings, conferences, phone calls and other pertinent communication mediums; may provide translation services to students during school assemblies as necessary.
  • Respond to inquiries, concerns or questions coming from parents related to school activities, program services or community resources.
  • May represent the District at a variety of school and community meetings; attend open-house, back-to-school night and other school activities.
  • Compose, distribute and respond to a variety of correspondence related to assigned liaison and support services; initiate and receive telephone calls; schedule and arrange various student, parent and other appointments as assigned; prepare agendas, minutes and letters of notification as needed.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records related to assigned activities; prepare reports and compile data regarding student behavior and attendance; document referrals for psychological, academic tutoring, medical, clothing, housing, and legal assistance; complete purchase order requisitions and track budget expenditures using appropriate application software.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining community resource contacts as appropriate; maintain information on available community resources for use by District personnel, parent groups and families.
  • Assist in scheduling, organizing and preparing materials for educational programs and workshops for parents, students and the community, including assisting in locating and making arrangements for speakers and refreshments.
  • May make home visits to acquire information and discuss school-related problems such as absenteeism, illnesses, behavior problems and other matters; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
