About The Position

The School of Phlebotomy is a comprehensive training program where paid student phlebotomists will learn to perform venipunctures and skin punctures (draw blood) to obtain blood specimens on all age groups, from children to adults. Training occurs through didactic (classroom) and clinical rotations covering the procedures that phlebotomists must perform, as well as the roles that phlebotomists play in the healthcare arena. They will gain the knowledge to perform a wide range of tasks to be responsible and accountable for providing specimens of the highest analytical quality for testing. The next cycle of the School of Phlebotomy begins on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. This application is for the Geisinger Bloomsburg site. Applications will close 6/01/26, at midnight. The Geisinger School of Phlebotomy’s NAACLS-accredited program includes training in all aspects of phlebotomy, as well as an introduction to the major sections within the laboratory (including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology). This program includes classroom lectures and clinical components, including a student laboratory and a clinical rotation. Students will be taught a variety of phlebotomy techniques to obtain blood samples from both adult and pediatric patients. They will be trained in the proper techniques to prepare specimens for testing, and they will learn about laboratory regulations, safety issues, and infection control procedures. Students will also learn the importance of accurate patient identification, along with procedures for obtaining quality lab specimens. Upon successful completion of the program, students can immediately transfer into a Phlebotomist II role within the Geisinger system! Classes begin and will run for 14 weeks. Classes are typically held from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Wednesday. Clinicals are Thursdays and Fridays up till week 9. Week 10-14 will be all clinical rotations with varying shift start times, locations, and 8–12-hour shifts. This enables a student to complete over 100 hours of classroom training and over 100 clinical hours at a Geisinger site. All students are paid an hourly rate for attending class and completing clinical rotations. There is no cost to the student to attend the School of Phlebotomy, other than the cost of obtaining scrub uniforms and necessary school supplies for class. This program is designed for those interested in working as phlebotomists upon graduation. It is not intended as a complement for a nursing, MD/DO, or other program that requires clinical experience hours. Upon acceptance to the school, students will be required to undergo the established Geisinger onboarding process which includes completing a background check, meeting with employee health (including a nicotine and drug screen), and providing references. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be promoted into a Full time Phlebotomist role within the Geisinger system! This training program is valued at $3,500, but the loan forgiveness is waived for students in exchange for a twenty-four-month work commitment. Students who accept a spot in our School will be required to sign a contract with Geisinger that outlines that in exchange for the subsidized education, the student agrees to work in a paid full-time capacity for Geisinger Medical Laboratories for twenty-four months following graduation from the program. Students should have reliable transportation to class as well as to clinic sites.
