About The Position

The School Nurse position is responsible for administering first aid, conducting health screenings, maintaining student medical records, and providing nursing care for accidents, illnesses, and preventive medicine. This role involves dispensing medication, communicating with health agencies, conducting training, and making recommendations regarding student health and school health programs. The nurse will also perform home visits, maintain medical supplies and equipment, and stay current with medical advances and public health issues.

Requirements

  • Graduation as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
  • One year of comprehensive nursing experience.
  • Knowledge of first aid, CPR, and nursing practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of various health-screening practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of policies and objectives of assigned program and activities.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of contagious diseases.
  • Ability to administer first aid according to established procedures.
  • Ability to conduct a variety of health screenings.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate student medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Administer first aid, CPR, and nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine, and other educational-related medical problems.
  • Conduct height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other health screenings as required.
  • Provide screening for head lice and observe students regularly to detect health needs.
  • Refer students to appropriate personnel, resources, or clinics and perform follow-up.
  • Maintain health records and medical logs, update immunization and student records, and prepare medical reports.
  • Dispense and retain medication and perform medical treatments according to physician's instructions and District guidelines.
  • Communicate with community health agencies and civic organizations to exchange information and coordinate student needs.
  • Conduct training for students, parents, and school staff.
  • Provide information and recommendations to principals, substitutes, teachers, and parents regarding student health issues and school health program needs.
  • Develop programs to meet school health needs.
  • Make home visits as required and authorize re-admission to school.
  • Maintain stock of first aid supplies and ensure medical equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Order supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Participate in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical advances, public health issues, and treatment procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
